Isla de la Plata, meaning Silver Island in English due to
rumours of treasure left behind by Sir Francis Drake. Located off
the coast of Ecuador, the closest mainland town being Puerto
Lopez.
The island is approximately 21 sq km.
The island is also known as the poor mans Galapagos's because the flora and fauna bear many similarities to that of the Galapagos Islands. Home to the three species of boobies, albatross, frigate birds and mocking birds. The waters around are also contain sea lions and sea turtles, and are breeding grounds for the humpback whale which migrate north to the island, and can be seen around June to September.
